I can't use layaway to put money towards new skis/bike
I could never throw down 1-2k for a new mountain bike or the latest skis I want, my wife would suggest we be more practical. This might be a good tie in with the "bad habit" app. Two avenues: 1) follow my idea of reporting and tracking your goal. 2) an actual escrow service where you can pay X amount and give it back at the end when it's all saved up (or work with the retailers to pay them directly.)

A common response to this idea is "Why wouldn't I just use my Savings Account instead?". Shops would need to offer incentives like a discount on the price of the bike and in-store discounts on other gear, service and rentals. This is a good opportunity for a shop to create a long term relationship with the Customer.
